ATLANTIC

Atlantic is designed for high legibility for long running text at small sizes (6pt-8pt). It’s strong horizontality and right angles in the counterforms lets more light into the counters, leading to highly recognizable letterforms.

CRAFT SANS

Every foundry or designer needs a workhorse sans serif, like every grocery store needs milk, eggs, and butter. Whether we like it or not, the geometric sans is one of the most popular and prevalent styles of typefaces in use. This is my version, in use on this site. For the time being it has a small characterset and is still under development.

EMERSON

A Scotch Roman revival, Emerson was taken from a book of poems from Wordsworth printed in 1934. In its original form, Emerson was meant for small print on bad paper. I’ve rethought it, trying to stay faithful to the original design, but updating it for modern uses, including an optical axis for a wider range of usuability.

STATE OF ABSTRACTION

The State of Abstraction catalog and postcard were created for an art exhibition curated by Daphne Anderson Deeds and Jacquelyn Gleisner hosted by the Washington Art Association in Washington Depot, CT. Custom lettering abstracts the letterforms of the show’s title, while the supportive neo-grotesk typeface provides clarity and sets the style for the remainder of the catalog.

HUMAN CRISIS

The Human Crisis gives form to Albert Camus’ speech originally given in 1946. The book was typewritten by cross referencing a 2016 performance of the speech with a transcription. The design takes its cues from Camus’ time as a newspaper editor during World War II and was hand typed in its entirety using an Underwood No.5 typewriter.

JANEIRO DISPLAY

The Janeiro display font is a project based on lettering used in a poster originally designed by Kenneth D. Shoesmith in 1920. The letterforms were scaned from this single piece and vectorized using FontLab. These Roman square capitals include small details that evoke the time in which they were created, rather than evoking imperial Rome. The future of this project will explore how to make these forms more contempory.
