DESCRIPTION

Atlantic was my project for the second and third terms at the Type at Cooper program. Between the first and second terms I read the book "While You're Reading" by Gerard Unger. In that book, Unger espouses his ideas on readability, what haPppens in our brains when we read, and his attempts at making fonts that more or less maximized readability.

I combined these thoughts in a niche genre of type that hasn't been considered for a while: nautical charts. The result is a typeface with horizontality in its counter forms, regular and square proportions in the lowercase, and limited contrast, all with the aim of improving readability. It includes an opentype stylistic set that includes alphanumeric signal flags.

Currently, Atlantic is currently getting redrawn, rekerned, and updated in other technical areas, applying what I've learned in the intervening years since I finished the Type at Cooper program.
